Dr. Juan B. Gutiérrez received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Florida State University in 2009. He earned tenure at the University of Georgia in 2016 and, since 2019, has served as Professor at the Department of Mathematics at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He held the Department Chair position from 2019 through 2025. His research centers on artificial intelligence, including large language models, multi-agent systems, and the mathematical foundations of trustworthy AI. He applies this work to multi-scale modeling of infectious diseases, population dynamics, and social phenomena. He is the founder and CEO of Attruvera Technologies, a UTSA research spinout that builds verification infrastructure for AI. Its platform provides attribution, provenance, and cryptographic audit trails so AI can be deployed accountably in regulated spaces. The company’s work rests on a mathematical premise: error-free AI is provably impossible, so what matters is making its failure modes visible and manageable. Beyond his scientific work, Dr. Gutiérrez is the author of “Extreme Conditions,” the first electronic novel in Spanish, and has received research awards in multiple countries. He is actively involved in STEM education research and outreach, with a professional commitment to ensuring that the face of success reflects the diversity of the nation. He teaches courses in applied mathematics, mathematical biology, and data analytics.
